Josh specializes in teaching people from all walks of life how to master practical knowledge and skills. In his talk, he shares how having his first child inspired him to approach learning in a whole new way.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. This guy is great! Hahahaha how can you knock this? He is absolutely right, all the haters are talking about the 10000 hour items that are expert level. You gotta start somewhere and he's trying to show you that 20 hours is all it takes to begin the journey and not feel incapable of achieving your dreams. This is for you in every way, stop doubting yourself. Mozart and Beethoven didn't sound so great on day one, heart surgeons don't appear out of nowhere, they had to start somewhere. I say thank you to this man!!!

So I actually don't write comments but I checked out this video like over two months ago. I set out to learn how to touch type and it has been a struggle but I can confirm that this is something that works. I am absolutely thrilled and would like to keep doing this for new tasks. Thank you TED :)

You can learn a lot in just one day. You don't even need 20 hours to learn something. You can learn faster than that it it took me about just a couple hours to learn how the basics of coding in html go because I would just think about it and try to make sense of it in my head all day without writing code. Your mind automatically stores important info and breaks it down for you making you improve without thinking.

Good talk, charismatic etc. BUT I have never read that it takes 10K to learn something. What the 10,000h rule alludes to is that in order to BECOME AN EXPERT at something takes (as he mentioned) 5 years at a full-time job. And I think that every professional person will agree with that.

So he's talking about learning the techniques? Knowing a single chord to play other songs does work in that analogy. When you've known the techniques is that where your learning curve starts to be slow?

sure, maybe you can learn 5 cords in 20 hours, but it's really not enough to make you good at most things. you might take 20 hours to learn python, but will you be able to build a mock google? no it won't. you can spend 20 hours learning new language, but after that you'll be able to recognize most common words, and then scratch your head trying to remember what do they mean once you hear them in new context. there's simply that thing called retention, where things evaporate from your head over time. i do believe that there's a relatively short amount of time to get basic concepts of something down, but for the most things it ain't going to be just 20 hours.
