Josh Kaufman is the author of the #1 international bestseller, 'The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business', as well as the upcoming book 'The First 20 Hours: Mastering the Toughest Part of Learning Anything.' Josh specializes in teaching people from all walks of life how to master practical knowledge and skills. In his talk, he shares how having his first child inspired him to approach learning in a whole new way.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I would like to see how someone can get decent in ballet after 20 hours, using this theory and all. It's a nice heuristic of learning, but not all skills are equal... Some may be learned in 20 hours... a lot of them dont...

Notice the guitar? I bet he could play the guitar before he 'experimented' about learning to play four chords on the uke in 20 hours. In his website he compares the uke and guitar what he already knows about the guitar gives him an advantage, a head start in comparison to the rookie. He had, of course, experience and practiced beforehand with a similar strummed stringinstrument - the guitar - which will obviously get you good results quicker. He doesn't reflect on that. For the untrained beginner it will take you many more than 20 hours of practice just to learn this popsong medley that Josh plays. Also, you can know the chords, in theory, beforehand: it is how to get the active motor skills of your body to align with your more passive understanding of rhythm that takes time. And combining it with singing... At least 200-300 hours, but really impossible to calculate beforehand.

+VelvetImpulse Exactly, I think it is a relevant critique of the untrue statement that anything can be learned in 20 hours. Probably nothing wrong with the method taken as good advice for learners, but it is really interesting and blatantly obvious that methods need to reflect on the experience the learner has beforehand.

VelvetImpulse
VelvetImpulse

I was thinking the same thing, and the fact he already knew what a chord was and how to read it means he had at least an understanding of music theory, which is also a huge shortcut when learning a musical instrument. The method is fine, but all things considered it would take well over 20 hours to get at a decent level.

This guy is great! Hahahaha how can you knock this? He is absolutely right, all the haters are talking about the 10000 hour items that are expert level. You gotta start somewhere and he's trying to show you that 20 hours is all it takes to begin the journey and not feel incapable of achieving your dreams. This is for you in every way, stop doubting yourself. Mozart and Beethoven didn't sound so great on day one, heart surgeons don't appear out of nowhere, they had to start somewhere. I say thank you to this man!!!
